The Chugoku Shimbun Co., Ltd. has published a special section of the newspaper where readers can enjoy the "Miyajima AR Overwater Fireworks Festival" on August 21, 2021.

The "Miyajima AR Overwater Fireworks Festival" was planned by the executive committee of the Miyajima Tourist Association, the city government and other organizations in order to preserve the memories of the fireworks as the "Miyajima Overwater Fireworks Festival", a summer tradition on the World Heritage island of Miyajima (Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture), comes to an end after half a century.

The special section of the newspaper was published to allow readers to enjoy the sound and light of fireworks by holding their smartphones over the newspaper. The fireworks bloom gloriously off Itsukushima Shrine and the silhouette of the Otorii gate appear in AR.

"The Miyajima Overwater Fireworks Festival" has been attracting spectators from all over the country as one of the most famous overwater fireworks festivals in Japan, but the burden of security on the day of the festival, which attracts about 50,000 people a day, has increased. Due to the difficulty in ensuring the safety of spectators, it was decided that the fireworks festival would be discontinued in April 2021.

The fireworks display in this project, which made use of latest AR technology, was spread on various social medias such as Twitter and Instagram, and people enjoyed the fireworks display in the newspaper.
