Behind the Build: Skateboarding Through Time with VIZIONSB

What if you could stand in the exact spot where a legendary skate trick happened—and watch it unfold in front of you?

That’s the idea behind VIZIONSB, an augmented reality time capsule built with 8th Wall Studio and anchored at Bastille Skatepark in Paris. This VPS-powered experience lets skaters and fans revisit iconic tricks in the places they originally happened, blending archival video, animated 3D avatars, and real-world locations into an interactive, site-specific performance.

Created by artist and developer 0xVIZION, this project doesn’t just celebrate skateboarding culture—it evolves it. Every month, a new trick submitted by local skaters will be turned into an AR filter, adding to the living archive and giving visitors new reasons to return.

We caught up with 0xVIZION to hear how it came together and what’s next.

I’ve always loved the idea of rewinding time, especially in spaces tied to culture and movement.

Skateboarding has these iconic moments that happen fast and often go undocumented, or live only in video. I wanted to bring them back into physical space in a way that feels present and personal, using AR as a bridge between memory and location.

How did 8th Wall Studio help bring your vision to life?

The biggest enabler was Visual Positioning System (VPS). Being able to scan a real skatepark and drop content directly into that space—visually and spatially anchored—was a game changer.

It’s not just that the 3D editor helped me see how things would lay out; it’s that I could build in direct relationship to a physical place, which made the whole experience more immersive and real.

Were there any major technical challenges?

Definitely. For one, getting the VPS scan to activate took a few tries, but the support team was fast and helpful.

Another useful piece was a custom script that disables frustum culling, so the 3D avatar wouldn’t disappear when the camera moved. That made the whole scene feel more stable and complete.

What were the key steps you took to bring this experience to life?

  • Multiple VPS scans to get the location just right and improve reliability
  • Sourcing scripts (like chromakey and frustum-culling fixes) from the community and GitHub
  • Creating a baked GLB animation of my avatar performing the trick
  • Designing a custom UI, with buttons that trigger the video and interactions in-scene
  • Asking for help—between forums, docs, and 8th Wall support, that collaboration moved things forward

What advice would you give to other developers interested in building real-world AR experiences with 8th Wall Studio?

Keep going. This kind of development can be hard, but it’s always worth it.

Start small, test often, and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Every obstacle you overcome becomes part of your toolkit—and AR rewards creativity in ways few mediums can.

Where do you see the future of AR, and how does 8th Wall Studio fit into that?

To me, the future is anchored AR. From ads and brand drops in specific spots, to historical time capsules and public memory, anchored experiences give us a way to explore space through time.

Cities could use AR to preview future buildings. Museums could use it to recreate lost moments. And with tools like VPS and 8th Wall Studio, it’s becoming more possible for independent creators to shape that vision, not just big institutions.

Build Your Own

VIZIONSB shows what’s possible when you combine real locations with creative storytelling, 3D animation, and a little bit of clever coding.
