How Generative AI Is Transforming 3D and XR Experiences
From enhancing development to engaging users in brand new ways, GenAI is quickly becoming a game changer in 3D/XR experiences

Generative AI is changing how experiences are being developed and how users interact with content. These experiences powered by 8th Wall are a great example of how AI is helping developers elevate their 3D/XR experiences.
Give characters the ability to chat for hours
Rock Paper Reality has used 8th Wall to create compelling WebAR experiences that involve AI-enabled characters. By using AI, they remove the limitations of scripted dialogue and allow for endless conversation, which feels more natural and can entertain users for longer periods of time. Both of these experiences made use of the Inworld platform, which gives characters the freedom to chat while keeping them in the world designed by the brand.
One of these characters is Purple Paradise, the charismatic skeleton mascot of Chronic Cellars wines. After accessing an AR-enabled website, users pointed their smartphone at a bottle of Chronic Cellars wine to bring it to life. What they saw was a 3D animated Purple Paradise inside the bottle, ready to answer questions, acting as their own personal wine sommelier. Users could then converse with the animated skeleton using the microphone on their smartphone and engage in a natural conversation about the wine. The same experience could be accessed without the AR on the web as more of a chatbot-style dialogue app.
Rock Paper Reality used a similar concept in an interactive AR game for McCain Regen Fries. This experience used gamified storytelling to amplify awareness and build excitement about regenerative agriculture for McCain’s global campaign. Called “Farms of the Future AR” this full-scale AR game asked users to take on the role of the farmer and challenged them to grow virtual potatoes using regenerative techniques. Once completed they then turned the potatoes into fries.
Inside the game were two AI-enabled characters: Vera, the farm guide and Wormy, a soil expert which were both trained on McCain’s knowledge base. They were there to answer any questions and provide hands-on learning moments.
As a center piece of McCain’s global campaign, Farms of the Future AR was deployed across 5 shopping malls in the UK. Rock Paper Reality reported that the mobile experience saw an average of 6 minutes of active user engagement.
Let users co-create the experience with you
As GenAI democratizes content creation, it can be added as a tool in your 3D/XR experience for users to co-create with you .
AIR Concepts did just that in its whimsical WebAR experience “Over The Moon Celebration.” The Hong Kong based studio combined AI and AR in this experience created for the mid-autumn festival. At the start of the experience, users were asked to answer one question: what would you fill the moon with? The answer would be used as a prompt to generate an image inside a 3D moon that they could then place in their physical space. The 3D moon leveraged 8th Wall’s sky segmentation capability which recognized the sky in the user’s camera to place it in the sky as if it was the real thing.
Personalize messages with a single prompt
Cadbury Dairy Milk also engaged users as part of the creation process in its AI and AR personalized greeting generator created by AliveNow. Users in Malaysia and Brunei scanned a QR code on a Cadbury Favourites or Fruit & Nut box to personalize a greeting they could send to friends and family. Users would enter information about the person they were thinking about, including the occasion, tone of the greeting, and then upload a picture. AI was used to generate a personalized message. This message was unlocked by the recipient when they entered the code and pointed their camera at the gifted candy box to watch the message animate and come to life in AR.
Elevate the storytelling experience
Web Dimension used GenAI to create compelling artwork as part of its WebAR experience “Britannia 1947% more history.” This use of emerging technologies helped Web Dimension bring history to life to tell untold stories of India's last living legends, the freedom fighters who fought tirelessly for independence. GenAI was used to create stunning pieces of art featuring these remarkable individuals who told their stories of independence in AR when you scanned packages of Britannia products.
GenAI is a powerful tool that developers are embracing today to elevate their 3D/XR experiences. With new AI solutions emerging daily, we are excited to see what developers create when they combine these tools with 8th Wall Studio. With AI and 3D/XR the possibilities are endless.
