A Week in WebAR: SEGA’s Space Channel 5, HSBC Bank and Reality Bytes

SEGA's Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash!

To promote the virtual reality version of SEGA’s Dreamcast rhythm game “Space Channel 5,” now available with PlayStation®VR (PS4), creative technology agency Mawari, Inc. developed an activation that lets fans preview the game in WebAR.

Anytime the user points their camera at the game’s logo, they can watch Space Channel 5 through a virtual TV monitor that appears to be floating in their real world environment. With WebAR, no apps are required so the user can access the experience by simply opening a link and in this case, scanning an image target with their phone’s camera.

Try it by tapping this link and then point your camera at the logo:

HSBC Bank

HSBC Bank — in association with WWF — teamed up with Australian agency Unbnd to create a WebAR activation that sheds light on the endangerment of wildlife of the Pantanal wetlands, which are threatened by deforestation and habitat degradation.

The WebAR experience uses image targets to bring 3D insects, tropical plants and crocodiles to life as they crawl out of a flat image of the Pantanal wetlands. Users have the ability to “Dive Deeper” by tapping a button while inside the experience to learn more about the world’s largest wetlands.

You can try it yourself — Tap this link and then point your camera at the image target:

Reality Bytes: Innovative Learning Using Augmented and Virtual Reality

An immersive book called Reality Bytes makes the case for AR and VR in the classroom by including practical, interactive examples of AR embedded in the book itself. To activate the educational experiences, all the reader has to do is scan a QR code or type the URL into their phone.

The book, which is written by Christine Lion-Bailey, Jesse Lubinksy and Micah Shippee and includes XR activations by Ready Learner One and agency Xennial Digital, uses WebAR technology by 8th Wall.
